15 Sivan 5763
Pirkei Avos 1:9
“Ima, could you write a note excusing me from the test because I was sick yesterday.”
“You weren’t sick. I can’t lie.”
“But yesterday you told the man that I was sixteen and I’m only fifteen.”
“Shimon ben Shetach says ‘Investigate witnesses thoroughly, be cautious with your words because maybe through them (your words) they (thewitnesses) will learn to lie.'”
Rav Shlomo Krieger explains “because maybe…” to mean that the judge should exhibit exemplary honesty, because otherwise the witnesses will learn to lie.
